Most recently the implementation of “smart materials” into the built context significantly broaden the architect’s horizon towards adaptive design and construction methods and the creation of new environments.

The thesis ´Statt Planung im Jemen. Moderne Wachstumsprozesse im traditionellen Rahmen´ analytically reflects current urban problems related to the indangered World Heritage Site and searchs for a sustainable development strategy for the new town of Zabid. Both self-directed and controlled tendencies of urban growth and development are analysed and visualized by means of scenarios.
