A suburban Tool
The thesis, “Forming a cultural ground”, proposes a literal displacement of excavation material by building flat cones. The cones are set in a regular grid and all have an accessible cone top at the same absolute altitude. Since the cone base varies in its height depending on the existing terrain, the number of different situations, as one walks through the landscape, is almost infinite. The resulting system of narrow and wide spaces creates a variety of spatial effects with cones appearing or disappearing in the ground.
The design project is focussing on the use of modeling and visualization tools in Landscape Architecture such as milling, programming and 3D illustration.
The design is entitled “A Suburban Tool”. A Tool because the landscape grows according to the amount of excavation material that is added to the site.
Suburban because the cones give a definition to sub- or peri-urban areas somewhere at the edge of the city, close to major infrastructural junctions or excavation sites.
A new “cultural landscape” grows and develops precision through interaction with people using the landscape.
